The recruitment of girls and young women for the Ajiri Dada Project follows a well laid down methodology. The aim is to ensure that the most deserving and qualified girls are enrolled in the project.

The Mother Goose Kenya

We recruit vulnerable young women from the informal settlements of Nairobi and adjacent rural areas where poverty levels are very high. Recruitment and vetting involve local administration, County government, religious leaders and opinion leaders. During recruitment, there is pre-screening, security checks, referencing and accessing the girls’ vulnerability.

Ajiri Dada focuses on poor and vulnerable girls at high risk of HIV from Nairobi’s informal settlements. The key recruitment criterion is, therefore, vulnerability. Other criteria include:

  • Age – the project targets AGYWs ages 18 to 24 years.
  • Clean criminal record – all girls undergo a criminal background check.
  • References – all girls are asked to provide the following references from their local parent, local chief and pastor.

For successful enrollment, the girls submit the following documentation:

  • A duly filled admission letter.
  • A recommendation letter from their local chief.
  • A recommendation letter from their pastor.
  • Copies of the national identity cards of the girl and her parent(s)/guardian(s).
  • A vulnerability assessment letter.
  • Two passport size photographs.

Upon admission at the boarding training centre, girls go through an orientation day where they are shown their way around the facility, introduced to staff and helped to settle down in their boarding quarters.
